Weekend Roundup

I am sure about 90% of you are going to be glued to your couches/chairs this weekend watching March Madness games. Enjoy a beer for me! I’ll probably be doing a little bit of that along with the usual things that I love (um, napping). Regardless of what you are doing, keep in mind…

Would you wear orchid lips?

Saturday’s Inside-Out-Pocket bag would be a perfect spring/summer purse for those looking for an excuse to spend a little of that tax return!

Emma Stone’s reaction to a personal message from Mel B of the Spice Girls is basically how any girl coming of age in the ’90s would act. Not going to lie I have watched Spice World in the last few months. TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT WHAT YOU REALLY REALLY WANT. (I want a personal message from one of the Spice Girls, preferably Baby Spice because she was my spirit Spice).

Francophiles/dress-lovers, this H&M dress has Eiffel Towers on it. Adorable doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Someone want to get me up to speed on Divergent? I can’t keep up with all these new-fangled young adult books! Side note: can’t young adults just read normal fiction books? What did they read in the past before YA was a thing?

Have a good weekend readers!

A Nice Travel Blush Brush

Sephora Collection Retractable Kabuki Brush

Sephora Collection Retractable Kabuki Brush

Kevin and I travel A LOT. Most of the time, it’s the 2.5 hour drive to Minneapolis for the weekend, which means most weeks I have to pack a travel bag. Again. And again. Ugh.It’s definitely not my favorite thing. However, I found an adorable, travel ready makeup blush brush. It is retractable so it keeps it clean and neat while barely taking up any room in my makeup bag (it’s only about two inches long and an inch wide….and that’s what she said)! Plus it is so soft and puts on a very subtle wash of color you can easily build up. It’s so nice, in fact, that I’ve been using it every day. For only $18, it’s also way cheaper than the $50 or so brushes that are typical at Sephora.

Some Lip Stains That Will Last Through Thanksgiving Dinner

If you are like me, the last thing I want to think about on Thanksgiving or any other holiday is retouching my makeup. When you are with your family or friends, you don’t need any distractions to take you out of the moment. That is precisely why I love lip stains so much. You can put them on once in the morning and they can stay on through the evening. That way you can feel put-together while being low maintenance. Bonus: no lipstick or lipgloss stain on the wine glasses!

Revlon’s Just Bitten lip stains are my favorite drugstore version. They come in several flattering shades and moisturize as well as staining your lips.

I love how these lip stains are like the love child of lipstick and lipgloss (scandalous!). What I adore about YSL’s version is that it has the glossy finish of a, yes, gloss that fades throughout the day into a more matte stain. Sure these stains are on the pricey side, but they do last a long time. Best yet, there are so many beautiful colors–I want to collect them all (isn’t that dangerously close to the Pokemon tagline?). Let’s be real though: these are way cooler than Pokemon. I can finally say that. Ten years ago, if I had even mentioned one bad thing about Pokemon my brother would have been destroyed.

What I am Loving: Jouer Matte Moisture Tint

_7310324My makeup routine is pretty minimal. Some concealer under the eyes, some eyeliner and eyeshadow, mascara and that is pretty much it. I have been looking for a tinted moisturizer for awhile now that I can use when I want to look a little bit more done (but not like I am wearing a mask of makeup). Recently I decided to try out Jouer’s Matte Moisture tint SPF15 on a whim…and I got to say, I am impressed! It provides some coverage without completely covering my skin. I have used it just in a few choice spots that need a little evening out and it blends in nicely. Since I ordered it online, I was worried about how the color would look on my skin, but fortunately the lightest color “Porcelain” matches my paler-than-most-ghosts skin. More good news: it is oil-free, hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic (won’t clog pores), and fragrance free, making it good for all skin types. You did good, Jouer.

What is your favorite tinted moisturizer?

Weekend Roundup

oct4As Jamie mentioned, we are bound for Kansas City this weekend to hang with our ladies! I am preparing my lungs–whenever we all hang out, I laugh so hard that it can be hard to breath. I live dangerously. This weekend keep in mind…

From E:

For those who are Scandal fans (and these days, who isn’t?), you may want to try this drinking game. Danger ahead! I am not responsible if you pass out drunk within the first 5 minutes.

I am loving a wash of plum eyeshadow for fall. It is surprisingly versatile and neutral–simply an upgrade to brown. I am using Makeup Up For Ever’s Aqua Cream in Plum.

What is The One Thing No One Knows About Obamacare (via Planet Money)? Hint: no, it was not first mentioned in an episode of Cheers. Guess away (or just click the link).

Recently we gave you the recipe to the BEST DESSERT IN THE WORLD (that is not a hyperbole), Dorothy Cake. Our cousin, Katie, over at the fantastic blog Live Half Full puts an autumn twist on the recipe by making it Pumpkin Dorothy Cake. Yum!

Looking for a go-to layering piece? How about this cozy cardigan from Madewell? I feel like I would never take it off.

If you are on the hunt for some home decor or just like daydreaming about it, admire this cute chevron art print from Etsy.

Have a good weekend, readers!

A Blush Palette for Someone as Indecisive as Me

Blush is one of those items that can be easy to forget to put on in the morning, but it makes a world of difference. You go from looking as pale as if you walked off the set of Twilight (minus the sparkle) to looking like you were in bed by 9 PM, getting your full 8 hours of beauty rest. Tarte’s blushes are one of my favorites as they don’t have those tell-tale chunks of glitter–you don’t want to look like you were styled by a 5 year old with a heavy-hand. They simply give you a little glow. They have a new palette available at Sephora that contains five of their blushes, each shade flattering every skin tone. I love it when I don’t have to go through the ordeal of choosing which shade to buy. While the blushes look pigmented in the picture below, fear not. They give you a sheer wash of color on your skin.

P.S. The palette comes with a cute little bracelet! Tarte, you beautiful bastards, always sweetening the deal.

Weekend Roundup

autumn20leafThis weekend, my mom and I are heading to Minnesota to visit Jamie and Kevin! Meanwhile, my Dad and my brother Kyle are heading up to Ann Arbor for the Michigan-Notre Dame football game. Lucky them. Also, GO BLUE! Here are a few things to keep in mind this weekend…

From E:

20 grown-up grilled cheeses. Beer-battered grilled cheese? Yes please. (yes, that rhymed).

Looking to overhaul your makeup look for autumn? Allure covers 8 sexy fall makeup colors. Pumpkin orange did not make the cut. There is always next year!

Darn, Slate did not like the new Salinger documentary. That is a pity–I was curious about it. I do think though that it seems invasive to have an entire documentary about a notoriously private writer. What always impressed me most about Salinger is that he let his work speak for itself. No long-winded biography or photo accompanies his books.

HBO’s fantastic miniseries Parade’s End (starring a spellbinding Rebecca Hall and Benedict Cumberbatch in some of the best acting I have seen) comes out on DVD on September 10th! If you are suffering from Downton Abbey withdrawal and want some WWI-era drama, you may want to check it out.

Neko Case’s new album is out! I have not listened to all of it yet, but I will give a review when I do!

Patti Smith circa 1976…Don’t just think of her this weekend. Think of her always. In related news, can I be her for one day? Or at least steal one iota of coolness from her? Pretty please? I promise to return it.

Medieval Lipstick

How could I not write about this beauty product when it combines both lipstick and a history connection? I feel like I have been writing a lot lately about makeup–I suppose because it is almost fall and the change of seasons lead me to mix up my look. Lipstick Queen’s Medieval Lipstick fulfills a lot of the things that I like in my lip products. It is hydrating, sheer, and the packaging is pretty snazzy too. I never like feeling like I have layers of paste on my lips (but who does?) so the sheer part is important and since my lips are perpetually in a state of chapness, I need something that won’t just highlight that. The lipstick was inspired by women in medieval times who used lemon to stain their lips a light red, enough to make them look extra sensual but not enough for men to call them a harlot.

Marc Jacobs Beauty

Ladies and gents, it’s here! Marc Jacobs beauty line has arrived at Sephora! I can’t wait to get my hands on some lip gloss/lipstick (perhaps Lovemarc lip gel in Dizzy Spell?) and the remedy concealer pen (we shall see how it holds it’s own against my perpetual undereye circles!). It will be a bit before I can try these babies out since I am in central Wisconsin where even the idea of Sephora does not exist. I promise to write a full review once I snatch some up at the local Sephora when I get home. Until then I will admire the sleek packaging from the safety of my computer screen.

One Beauty Product You May Be Missing…

I love makeup. I don’t even wear that much makeup on a daily basis (mascara, eyeliner, under eye concealer), but I have spent a small fortune at Sephora, enough to buy a small airplane or a very small European country. Still, it was not until recently that I decided to finally try out an eyebrow pencil. Let me tell you, it makes all the difference. My eyebrows are pretty dark too but the pencil makes them look defined and structured. I use Laura Mercier eyebrow pencil in Warm Brunette. For a cheaper drugstore alternative, Revlon has an eyebrow pencil that includes gel to hold unruly hairs in place. Nifty!
