Some of My Newly Discovered Favorite Things

Long time, no blog. I apologize for our absence. It’s been a crazy last few months with surgeries, travels, and everything in between. I admire anyone who can blog regularly during the summer. I thought I’d break the dry spell with a little post on an assortment of things that I have discovered since the last time we spoke.

Category 1: Entertainment

Hotwives of Orlando

I’ve never watched any of the Real Housewives series, but even for a newbie this spoof from Hulu still hits all the absurd notes. I’ve been a fan of Casey Wilson since Happy Endings (may it R.I.P. or be resurrected by Netflix) and the rest of the cast (including a memorable Kristen Schaal as a former child star turned train wreck) totally sell the hilarious story lines. If you are looking for a comedy with substance, this isn’t it, but it’s a perfect little diversion for days that are too hot to go outside (I do not enjoy feeling like I am living in a sauna from which there is no escape). You can’t go wrong with a show that brings you the line, “This is Orlando. You go big or you go back to Kissimmee.”

Category 2: Beauty

I’m always on the lookout for good standbys that I can rely on day in and day out, season after season. I’m sure you ladies reading this post understand.

I don’t know how they do it, but my lips manage to stay chapped even in the summer months. It would be impressive if it wasn’t so damn annoying. Enter cult classic Lucas Papaw. One application a day has kept the chapped lips away. I’m applying some right now. It isn’t just for chapped lips. You can also use the ointment on cuts, bruises, basically any skin malady. You can buy a 3-pack from Net-a-Porter. Those babies should last you throughout the year.

Eyeliner is one of those products that I have a lot of, but my application lacks skill of any kind. Most of the time it just looks like I let a kindergartener trace my eye with a unsharpened crayon. Votre Vu’s eyeliner is super creamy so it makes drawing a breeze. Better yet, it comes with a little smudger on the other end so you can get that perfect hazy coat of color worn by actors, singers, anyone with a makeup artist on hand (you know the look–like you’ve just finished making out with Idris Elba before realizing you had to go to a red carpet). My favorite colors are Charbon and Aubergine.

Weekend Roundup

I am sure about 90% of you are going to be glued to your couches/chairs this weekend watching March Madness games. Enjoy a beer for me! I’ll probably be doing a little bit of that along with the usual things that I love (um, napping). Regardless of what you are doing, keep in mind…

Would you wear orchid lips?

Saturday’s Inside-Out-Pocket bag would be a perfect spring/summer purse for those looking for an excuse to spend a little of that tax return!

Emma Stone’s reaction to a personal message from Mel B of the Spice Girls is basically how any girl coming of age in the ’90s would act. Not going to lie I have watched Spice World in the last few months. TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT WHAT YOU REALLY REALLY WANT. (I want a personal message from one of the Spice Girls, preferably Baby Spice because she was my spirit Spice).

Francophiles/dress-lovers, this H&M dress has Eiffel Towers on it. Adorable doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Someone want to get me up to speed on Divergent? I can’t keep up with all these new-fangled young adult books! Side note: can’t young adults just read normal fiction books? What did they read in the past before YA was a thing?

Have a good weekend readers!

Your New Go-To Spring Hairstyle

It isn’t a braid or crazy updo that will take you hours to master even after studying ten beauty youtube videos. All you do is need to do is push your hair to one side. Let me break it down for you. Keri Russell, star of FX’s The Americans (and earlier, Felicity), rocks this hairstyle on the show and off-screen. I don’t blame her–if my hair looked that good, I would never wear it any other way. Side note: how did I not realize Keri Russell is so damn gorgeous?

The perpetually luminous Emma Watson’s interpretation is a little wilder, but still totally adorable. The exposed pins give it an edge.

Will you be trying out this style out? I will be once my hair gets a little longer!

February Discoveries

Winter hasn’t been all bad despite the attempts by the polar vortex to wreck havoc on all of us. Here are a few things that have gotten me through the doldrums of January and February.

I stumbled across this website Stitch Fix which acts as your personal stylist. You tell them what you want/need, how much you like to spend on items, what your style is like (there is even a place to put a link to your Pinterest board–I know you have one!). You can also tell them what colors, prints, and fabrics you want to avoid.  You get the delivery which has 5 items in it–you try on the items in the safety of your own home (and by safety I mean mental safety–those dressing room mirrors are rough).

The first season of FX’s The Americans is now available for free with Amazon Prime. I needed something to watch so I kind of just mindlessly chose it. Boy was I in for a surprise! Not since the first season of Homeland has t.v. been this suspenseful. I particularly enjoy that it gives us two anti-heroes as main characters. You too will find yourself feeling guilty as you cheer on KGB spies. The Cold War has never looked so cool.

P.S. Yes, I will post about my European vacation! Look for it soon!

A Nice Travel Blush Brush

Sephora Collection Retractable Kabuki Brush

Sephora Collection Retractable Kabuki Brush

Kevin and I travel A LOT. Most of the time, it’s the 2.5 hour drive to Minneapolis for the weekend, which means most weeks I have to pack a travel bag. Again. And again. Ugh.It’s definitely not my favorite thing. However, I found an adorable, travel ready makeup blush brush. It is retractable so it keeps it clean and neat while barely taking up any room in my makeup bag (it’s only about two inches long and an inch wide….and that’s what she said)! Plus it is so soft and puts on a very subtle wash of color you can easily build up. It’s so nice, in fact, that I’ve been using it every day. For only $18, it’s also way cheaper than the $50 or so brushes that are typical at Sephora.

Let’s Daydream of Spring Flats

It is hard to think of spring when there is snow, negative wind chills, and permanent dry skin to worry about. Seeing these cheery little pointed flats make me so darn happy though. They are like spring in a shoe. I’d wear them with a printed dress or skinny jeans that hit right at the ankle. Did I mention that I am sick of winter?

Everlane Expands Their Sweatshirt/Sweater Collection

Ladies and gents–my beloved Everlane now has several new styles of sweatshirts and sweaters. Raise your hand if you can’t wait to get a hold of one of these babies! When it comes to your wardrobe basics, you can’t beat Everlane’s quality and prices. I love how their pieces have that semi-slouchy je ne sais quoi look that elevates your t-shirt to the next style level. I am not the only one addicted in my family: my mom is slowly accumulating the entire Everlane t-shirt collection.

Some Ideas for Ladies Looking for a 2014 Makeover

I will admit that I am the most restless person when it comes to my beauty routines. That is why I basically own what amounts to an entire Sephora (which confuses people because I don’t wear a lot of makeup)–every once in awhile, I feel that itch to overhaul and nothing is out of bounds (makeup, hair, clothes, shoes…). Here are some ideas for the ladies out there like me that want a change, from little to big.

Zosia Mamet’s new haircut is gosh-darn adorable, and I am not just saying that because my hair is currently pretty similar. It is one of those styles that looks good sleek, slightly messed up, or curly. Really can’t ask more for a haircut, can you? Plus, nothing says “a fresh start” like a chop–there’s a reason Sabrina Fairchild returned to Long Island with a new hairdo!

The star of Girls before and after

Not feeling shorter hair? How about some bangs? Mini bangs are having a moment. They may be trickier to pull off, but the impeccable Lizzy Caplan proves they can be oh-so-chic (have you seen her on Masters of Sex? Lady is talented–and hotter than hot). Style them retro, style them funky–the option is yours. I would definitely take the plunge if my bangs weren’t already crazy cowlick-y. Goodness knows what short bangs would do to them.

For those who are quite pleased with their hair and want it to stay that way, how about mixing up some of your makeup? It lets you experiment without the commitment (kind of like college, in many ways! Haha). For lips, try berry instead of red lipstick or gloss. Equally sophisticated, but much more unexpected. My picks are cult favorite Clinque Almost Lipstick in Black Honey for a subdued pout and YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain in Rouge Philtre if you want more of a pop of color.

Purple eyeshadow and liner is surprisingly versatile. Try substituting your black and brown pencils with plums, lavender, or lilac. It looks striking against green eyes, but any eye color can pull it off. Go darker for a night out on the town and lighter for a classic-with-a-twist work look. I think you will be amazed how much you like it. Check out Olivia Wilde rocking the look below. Convinced yet?

A Whimsical Peter Pan-Inspired Decor Idea

How absolutely fabulous is this decoration? I have always been a little bit obsessed with Peter Pan (who didn’t unsuccessfully try to fly using only happy thoughts?) and I was just telling Jamie this weekend that I would love to decorate my future children’s rooms with a Peter Pan theme. I would put it up in my room now, but I have a feeling that it would keep throwing me off especially since I am almost legally blind without my contacts.

“To live would be an awfully big adventure.”

Gift Ideas for Your Bookworm

Why not give the gift of knowledge? (Says the English major).

The Good Lord Bird won the National Book award for Fiction in 2013. Looks like it will appeal those with a Mark Twain sensibility.

The best thing about the latest movie of The Great Gatbsy is the resurgence of Gatsby-themed items. This necklace is EVERYTHING. Bookworms deserve to look nice too.

Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 9.44.28 PMAn intensely readable history book that will make you rethink all the times you dozed off in history class. I would read this one along with your friend/family member/spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend. You don’t want them to know more than you and start making haughty English history references that you don’t understand.
