Some Lip Stains That Will Last Through Thanksgiving Dinner

If you are like me, the last thing I want to think about on Thanksgiving or any other holiday is retouching my makeup. When you are with your family or friends, you don’t need any distractions to take you out of the moment. That is precisely why I love lip stains so much. You can put them on once in the morning and they can stay on through the evening. That way you can feel put-together while being low maintenance. Bonus: no lipstick or lipgloss stain on the wine glasses!

Revlon’s Just Bitten lip stains are my favorite drugstore version. They come in several flattering shades and moisturize as well as staining your lips.

I love how these lip stains are like the love child of lipstick and lipgloss (scandalous!). What I adore about YSL’s version is that it has the glossy finish of a, yes, gloss that fades throughout the day into a more matte stain. Sure these stains are on the pricey side, but they do last a long time. Best yet, there are so many beautiful colors–I want to collect them all (isn’t that dangerously close to the Pokemon tagline?). Let’s be real though: these are way cooler than Pokemon. I can finally say that. Ten years ago, if I had even mentioned one bad thing about Pokemon my brother would have been destroyed.

My Favorite Holiday Movie is….

The Muppet Christmas Carol of course! It took a lot of restraint to not pull it out to watch last weekend! What is there not to love about it? There are Muppets, songs, Muppets, Michael Caine, Muppets, early CGI, Gonzo as Charles Dickens, rats dancing the hula….I would watch it all year long if it was socially acceptable. We also have a tradition in my family to all watch Christmas Vacation at some point. My Dad has seen it a thousand times at least, but still cracks up the entire movie which honestly makes the movie for me (his laugh is contagious!). The only Christmas movie that causes a lot of tension in the household is A Christmas Story–my Mom and Lindsay will fervently tell all who will listen how much they hate it while my Dad, Jamie, and I can sit down and watch all 24 hours of it on Christmas Eve. I don’t know what side my brother Kyle is on…he is old enough now to pick an allegiance.

What movies do you watch every holiday season? There are so many good ones!

A Quote for the Day

How beautiful. Virginia had quite the way of putting things.

A Wild Karaoke-Filled Thanksgiving

We celebrated Thanksgiving early this year with everyone home and boy, did it crazy! It started off relatively tame, but then my brother, Kyle, and his girlfriend Aimee arrived which commenced the drinking. We played several drinking games before leaving to go to a local bar to do karaoke (since it was also Lindsay’s girlfriend Melissa’s birthday). The next morning while recounting our adventures is when we truly realized how insane it was. Some of the highlights:

  • Me doing my drunk thing and hugging complete strangers. We were sitting near the bathrooms so lots of people fell prey to my hugs.
  • Aimee suddenly appearing with popcorn to my complete disgust (I thought someone had randomly handed it to her–no fear, it was free at the bar).
  • Melissa yelling very loudly at two sweet guys outside the bar as we left (“Thanks Kyle” she said as he helped her get to the car. “You aren’t like those DOUCHEBAGS!”)
  • Kyle making at least a thousand friends including an old man with a fancy fedora and silky vest who apparently sold gold coins to get pool cues…or at least that is what Kyle and Lindsay remember him saying.
  • Kyle and Kevin dancing weirdly while using Lindsay’s jacket as accessories.
  • Lindsay and Melissa singing “Shoop” while a man dressed in matching orange sweatshirt and sweatpants danced to their rendition.
  • Visiting unsuccessfully two Taco Bells on the way home–and pulling out of the drive thru in both of them. Kyle also at one point got out of the car and peed by a nearby tree before directing traffic by the drive thru.

There was so many other weird stories, which would take a lot longer to describe. Suffice it to say there was a lot of laughter the next morning when we tried to piece together the night.

Weekend Roundup

After a pretty hectic/scary medical situation with my Dad earlier this week, this weekend the family will coincidentally be celebrating Thanksgiving early. My sister, Lindsay, and her lady Melissa are in town from Portland plus Jamie and her brand-new fiance Kevin will be here for the weekend for the festivities. This weekend keep in mind…

If changes in the seasons make you want to do something drastic with your hair, how about a bob? All the cool kids are doing it! Including me! I am more “kid” than “cool” though.

I absolutely love Joanna’s home makeover! It looks welcoming and stylish without feeling overly “done.”

MUPPETS! MUPPETS! MUPPETS! (P.S. My Mom turned to me recently, very seriously, and said, “No one likes the Muppets!” Is she auditioning to be a villain in the next Muppets movie?)

Have a great weekend, readers!

Have You Ever Had to Call 9-1-1?

I had to do it for the first time on Wednesday! The experience was so quick and surreal that I am honestly still reeling from it. Wednesday morning I came downstairs to find my Dad slumped over in the chair. He immediately told me to call 9-1-1. No warning, no time to think. Isn’t it funny how there are details that you are sure you will never forget? Like when he told me to call an ambulance, I was chewing trail-mix and I promptly spit it out in my hands so that I could talk at once. The ambulance arrived momentarily and I am thankful that the EMTs were very kind to this crazy, still-in-her-pajamas lady. At that point you can imagine that I was having a full on panic attack, especially since my Mom was out of town and I was the only one in the house. Luckily, after two days in the hospital my Dad was able to come home. Phew.

A Stocking Stuffer Idea

I can’t help sharing this adorable Madewell ring, but if it sells out before I buy one for myself you are all going to hear about it! I love the little cut outs–they give it a bit of edge without going overboard. A ring like this can go with a lot of different outfits and a lot of different styles. I would end with a Beyonce/”Single Ladies” reference, but I am going to peace out on this post without embarrassing myself.

My Worst Nightmare…in a Sleeping Bag!

No, I know what you are thinking, but it isn’t Mario Lopez waiting for me in a sleep bag (that is more disgusting than nightmarish). Someone decided it would be funny to make a sleeping bag in which you are lying inside of an orca or as they are better known killer whales (I was going to go with Satan’s Whale Children, but that seemed too kind). The horror, the horror…I already suffer from orca dreams on a regular basis…this isn’t going to help matters.

Things I Never Thought I Would Do: Pilates

half_trapeze_2_1While some people rise to the challenge of exercise, I am a little more indifferent. There are a lot of other things that I would rather be doing such as watching another episode of Extras or thinking about how adorable Kermit the Frog is when he rides a bike (someone has to think about those things). However, my mom wanted a Pilates partner so decided to give it a try. Luckily, I love it! Sure, I get sore in muscles that I didn’t know that I had and you use a reformer machine that looks like a 21st century mass-produced medieval torture rack. It still is way more fun than just walking on a treadmill mindlessly and you see results pretty quick!

Who else loves Pilates? Have you tried the reformer?

There are many reasons to be excited about Alexander Payne’s latest film, Nebraska. First of all, it stars Bruce Dern and Will Forte. Second, Payne is truly one of the best American directors out there–his movies have a Midwestern focus and a nuanced look at ordinary lives that 98% of Hollywood ignores.Third, my older sister, Lindsay, actually worked as assistant casting director on the film! I am like a proud mother. I may cry when I see her name up on the screen.
