Among the many, many intriguing themes that the superb Before Midnight brings up is the question of what brings the most happiness: romantic relationships or friendships? One of the characters tells a story about their grandmother who wrote a long letter on her deathbed essentially saying that she got the most happiness in her life not out of her marriage but from her work and her friends. f I got to say, it is a hard one to “resolve” (if there is indeed a correct answer, which I doubt there is). I would not trade my friendships for the world–with my friends I talk about everything from politics to religion to weddings to bad television. The list goes on! After hanging out with them I feel so alive and reinvigorated! Then again, romantic relationships are special enough in themselves to have writers, singers, and artists inspired by them for millennia!
What say you, readers?
