Lately, I’ve been remembering some of favorite pictures books when I was really little. I noticed a theme in a few of my top ones–they are a BIT terrifying and they typically involve possums, which were my favorite animal for awhile (yep, I’m as weird as my choice in books). Every summer when I would visit my grandparents in Wisconsin, I would immediately go to the public library and pick up Possum Come a-Knockin’. It is as horrifying as it sounds–a creeper possum, who I assume is homeless and wandering the streets with a freaking top hat, knocks on random doors. The kid who lives in one house keeps insisting to his family a possum is outside but every time they check, he is gone. Yet he keeps coming back. YIKES. As a kid, I found this awesome and amusing. As an adult, it makes me want to buy a security system.
Anyone else look back at old childhood books and find them….less cute as an adult?
