Blood & Beauty

I got another book recommendation for you literary minded readers! It is historical fiction but of the most scandalous variety, centering around the Borgias. Pope Alexander VI and his illegitimate children have continued to be fodder for novelists since their quick rise and fall in Renaissance Italy. In her fascinating novel Blood & Beauty: The Borgias; A Novel, Sarah Dunant embraces the elements of corruption but not without also showcasing the fierce devotion each Borgia had for family. I started off the novel with a prejudice against Alexander for elevating his offspring yet I soon felt for the man who so obviously loved his children (enough to claim them as his own even if he was a man of the Church). Lush imagery and a poetic style, I demolished this novel in one day. I love trying telling people about Pope Alexander hosting his daughter’s wedding at the Vatican….they nod at first and then they do a double take, “wait what? Pope’s daughter?”
