A few days ago, I was surfing the internet and came across this article about Cheryl Strayed’s beautifully written memoir Wild:From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail being turned from a book into a film. Reese Witherspoon will be producing and playing Cheryl Strayed in the film version. I am really torn about this project overall. I absolutely loved Strayed’s prose in the book & could feel her pain at losing her mother at such a young age. Some memoirs feel self-important and egotistical but not Wild. Strayed managed to tell her remarkable story in a way that made you feel like she was a good friend who was just telling you about this stage in her life. She talks about hurting her husband at the time through infidelity, using drugs, and essentially wasting away through her pain before setting out for a 1,000+ mile hike alone. I really hope Witherspoon will be able to keep Strayed’s humility and likability through the translation from book to screen. While I really do like Witherspoon as an actress, she is also over 10 years older than Strayed was at the time of the memoir. Still, I look forward to seeing this finished product.
Has anyone else read Wild? Is anyone else excited or disappointed by the film version in the works?
