For fans of Tudor history, Philippa Gregory or those eagerly awaiting the Starz series The White Queen, The White Princess is coming out on July 23rd. It centers around Elizabeth of York, the mother of the future Henry VIII and the daughter of The White Queen’s Elizabeth Woodville. Elizabeth of York is having a mini revival these days-Alison Weir has a biography of her that will be published in the fall. Most of us only know her for who she birthed and who she married, but Elizabeth has an interesting story all her own. Some say that she was in love with her uncle, Richard III. Even if that was untrue, the rumors of Richard intending to marry his niece after the death of his wife were so prevalent that he had to make a rather embarrassing public denouncement of any such plans. Keep in mind that Richard III was not the deformed old man we think of but rather 32 years old and supposedly quite handsome (and only about 13 years older than Elizabeth). Plus let’s remember that Elizabeth’s husband, Henry Tudor, deposed and killed Richard in battle so if she was in love with her uncle…well, that would have been an awkward time, to put it mildly.
